Lesson One – Word Guess

This English teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to play word games to identify the spelling and meaning of different words with the /s/ sound spelt c that can be used to describe a range of wild animals.
The class can practise using some of the words with the same phoneme sound in sentences about some of the different wild animals that could be kept as a pet by a family.

Activities in this teaching pack include a worksheet to play games identifying the spelling of different words with the /s/ sound spelt c for core and extension ability levels and a set of cards to group spellings with the matching /s/ sound spelt c in different words for support ability levels.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore the spelling and meaning of different words with the /s/ sound spelt c that can be used to describe wild animals.
This lesson is part of an English scheme of work to get the children to write and edit poems about different animals using patterned language, practise spelling words with the /s/ sound spelt c and write expanded noun phrases to describe and specify people, places and things related to wild animals to use when composing lines for a poem. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
