Shape Patterns

This maths scheme of work for Key Stage One gets the children to identify, describe and classify sets of 2D shapes by their matching properties when used in examples of repeating patterns. The class can produce models to show tessellating patterns that can be seen in different places.

Roof Tiles
Identify and describe the properties of some of the different shapes that might be visible on the roof of a building that have been arranged into a repeating pattern

Shape Changes
Investigate and record some of the different ways that can be used to change the size, appearance and orientation of different shapes in repeating patterns

City Pavements
Explore and record how to select and compare some different shapes that have been used in tessellating patterns found on a range of pavements around a city location
-
Ship Sounds
Select, compose and play some of the different sounds using high and low pitches that can be made by ships and boats when at sea and in harbours
-
Addition Bonds and Sums
Practise using different mental and informal written calculations to add pairs of one and two digit numbers using concrete objects and diagrams to support calculations
-
School Stories
Practise composing and presenting narrative stories to illustrate the sequence of events that could happen in locations around a school
-
Special Family Places
Read and write poems about different places that are special to families using descriptive vocabulary words and patterned language
