Lesson Four – Winter Birds

This science teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to name. describe and compare some common British birds that might visit a family garden or the school grounds and describe ways to care for them during winter.
The class can investigate some of the different birds that might visit the school grounds by making some model bird feeders to attract different animals so that they can be observed.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe some of the common British birds that might visit the school grounds, a template to count and record numbers of different birds that feed in an area in the school grounds and a worksheet to name different birds that might visit the school grounds.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore some of the common British birds and describe ways to care for them during the winter.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to identify, observe and record some of changes to the natural world during the winter season including changes to daylight hours, temperature and animal habitats. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
