School Debates

This English scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to explain and model how to compose a range of discussion texts to debate and present arguments about issues that are important to life in a school. The class can model how to present viewpoints of different groups about each school issue.

Classroom Rules
Identify and devise a set of behaviour and academic rules that are needed to run the classroom efficiently throughout the school year

School Rules
Select and compose a range of complex sentences to use in a discussion text containing facts and opinions describing different school issues and rules

Books or Laptops
Select and record the viewpoints of different groups about whether pupils in a school learn best by working using either books or laptops

Mobile Phones
Explore and model how to format and structure a discursive writing text to argue different points of view about whether pupils should be allowed to use mobile phones when at school

Times Tables Division
Practise using facts in each of the times tables to support the division of pairs of numbers when solving a range of problems

Football Teams
Investigate and record how to format and structure letters that could be sent to and from football teams for different purposes and functions

Practise composing and publishing letters to different members in the school community for a range of functions and purposes

Living Things and Habitats
Identify, group and compare some of the different plants and animals that live in a variety of habitats around the world
