Lesson Three – Helmet Model

This art and design teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate how to select and work with some different materials to mould a range of shapes that can be used for the design of an astronaut’s space helmet.

The class can practise using papier mache to produce the initial shape construction for their space helmet design explaining why they have selected special shapes.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to investigate how to select and work with some different materials to mould a range of shapes that can be used for the design of an astronaut’s space helmet

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe how to use different shapes for the artwork of an astronaut’s space helmet and a worksheet to follow a set of instructions about how to make a model of an astronaut’s space helmet using papier mache.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore how to use different materials to mould a range of shapes that can be used for the design of a space helmet.

This lesson is part of an art and design scheme of work to get the children to select, shape and combine different mouldable materials to make a model of an astronaut’s helmet that could be worn when exploring space. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
