Lesson One – Sputnik and Apollo

This art and design teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate and record some of the different designs and materials that can be used to make helmets for astronauts to wear when travelling and working in space.

The class can practise sketching an example of a space helmet and describe and label the shapes and materials that has been used in its shape and construction.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe the shape and design of an astronaut space helmet and a table display card to explain and record the shape and materials that have been used in the design of a helmet for an astronaut to wear in space.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore and record some of the the different designs and materials that can be used in astronaut space helmets.

This lesson is part of an art and design scheme of work to get the children to select, shape and combine different mouldable materials to make a model of an astronaut’s helmet that could be worn when exploring space. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
