Lesson Four – Counting Money

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to practise using counting on to add different pairs of two digit numbers and ones to identify and record sets of money coins to match each selected sum.
The class can practise using diagrams to model how to add numbers when counting on ones from the biggest number in each addition number calculation.

Activities in this teaching pack include differentiated worksheets to select different numbers to thirty for support ability levels, to fifty for core ability levels and to one hundred for extension ability levels to change by adding a matching number of ones when using counting on.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to use counting on to add pairs of two digit numbers and ones to identify sums of matching sets of money coins.
This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to practise using different mental and informal written calculations to add pairs of one and two digit numbers using concrete objects and diagrams to support calculations. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
