Lesson Three – Castle Drawbridge

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to design and build a model of a part of a castle that includes a movement mechanism to raise and lower a drawbridge.
The class can explain why specific materials were used to build a drawbridge and suggest how they can be moved to allow entry into the castle for the inhabitants.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to teach the children to design and build a model of a part of a castle that includes a movement mechanism to raise and lower a drawbridge
Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe some of the different materials that can be used to make parts of a castle and a shared reading text to follow set of instructions about how to shape and combine materials to make a model of a castle drawbridge with a movement mechanism.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to design and build a model of a part of a castle that includes a movement mechanism.
This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to explore and model some of the different shapes and techniques that can be used to construct a model of a castle showing the main parts and their functions. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
