Unit D – Measurement

This numeracy scheme of work for the Foundation Stage gets the children to measure, compare and record the mass and capacity of different objects and containers using a range of non-standard measurements. The class can use bucket balances to compare the mass of toys and classroom objects.

Lesson One : Heavy or Light
Identify, describe and compare the mass of different classroom objects and sort them into groups of similar sizes using matching vocabulary words

Lesson Two : Comparing Mass
Practise using a bucket balance correctly to identify, compare and record the mass of different pairs of classroom objects and tools

Lesson Three : Heaviest Toy
Practise selecting and comparing the mass of pair of toys using a bucket balance correctly to make each comparison

Lesson Four : Full or Empty
Investigate how to select and use the correct vocabulary words to describe the capacity of different vessels and containers

Lesson Five : Filling Bottles
Explore and record how to measure and compare the capacity of different sized vessels and containers using non-standard measurements and vocabulary words
