Unit F – Measurement

This numeracy scheme of work for the Foundation Stage gets the children to practise and model different ways of measuring and comparing the length, height, volume, capacity and mass of objects using counting skills. The class can identify and explain how to use non-standard measurements to compare objects.

Practise and model different ways of measuring and comparing the length, height, volume, capacity and mass of different objects by using counting skills

Lesson One : Classroom Heights
Investigate and practise different ways of comparing the height of classroom objects using non-standard measurements

Lesson Two : Cube Towers
Measure and compare the height of objects using non-standard measurements for numbers of cubes built into tower shapes

Lesson Three : Container Volumes
Estimate, measure and compare the number of objects that can fill different containers that might be used in the classroom

Lesson Four : Vessel Capacities
Identify and compare the capacities of different sized vessels and containers using special vocabulary and by counting cubes

Lesson Five : Comparing Masses
Use non-standard measurements to estimate, describe and compare the mass of different objects used in the classroom
-
School Friends
Investigate, describe and model some of the special ways of providing practical, spiritual and emotional support to other pupils in the school
-
School Pictograms
Explore how to count and record the numbers of different pieces of school equipment that can be found in trays stored around the classroom
-
Listening Skills
Develop and refine listening skills when practising how to follow commands and instructions when playing games and role-playing actions
-
Halving Things
Explain and model how to find and record the halves of some of the different objects that can be used at home and in school
