Lesson Five – Comparing Masses

This numeracy teaching pack for the Foundation Stage gets the children to use non-standard measurements to estimate, describe and compare the mass of different objects used in the classroom.

The class can practise using bucket balances to identify numbers of cube shapes that can match the mass of other classroom and woodland objects.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to teach the children to use non-standard measurements to estimate, describe and compare the mass of different objects used in the classroom

Activities in this teaching pack include a template to measure and record the number of cubes that are the same mass as different objects and a worksheet to select and list some of the different objects that can be found around the classroom that are heavier or lighter than another object.

The interactive presentation gets the children to practise making comparisons between pairs of objects using the correct vocabulary for lighter and heavier and by counting matching numbers of cubes.

.This lesson is part of a numeracy scheme of work to get the children to practise and model different ways of measuring and comparing the length, height, volume, capacity and mass of different objects by using counting skills. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
