Lesson Two – Castle Locations

This history teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to explore how to research and record some of the best locations that could be used for the site of a castle building in the past to provide protection for the inhabitants.
The class can write an explanation as to why a castle should be built in a specific location such as close to a river for a source of water or on top of a hill to make it difficult to attack.

Activities in this teaching pack include a display poster to identify and describe the best location to build a castle, a shared reading text to explore why a castle could be built in different places, a template to write a speech to explain the best location that can be used for a castle building and a set of cards to match reasons as to why a castle should be built in a range of places.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore how to research and identify some of the best locations that could be used for the site of a castle.
This lesson is part of a history scheme of work to get the children to investigate and record different ways that castles were constructed and located in the past to provide protection to the inhabitants and local community. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
