Lesson Three – Extinction

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate and record information about some of the changes to living things that have occurred over time and record reasons as to why some animals became extinct.
The class can compose and present a written report to suggest how one particular animal might become endangered or go extinct in the world in the future.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe extinct animals that existed on Earth in the past, a shared reading text to explain some of reasons for an animal’s extinction in the past and a template to select and record reasons for and the possible prevention of the extinction of a species of animal.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and record information about some of the different changes to living things that have occurred over time and record reasons why some became extinct.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to explore how living things adapt and evolve over time as a result of competition for natural resources and transfer inherited traits to their offspring. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
