Testing Materials

This science scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate and test the properties of different types of materials including durability, opacity, strength and conductivity. The class can plan and complete tests to explore the material properties of paper, metals, plastics and fabrics using fair testing skills.

Investigate and test the properties of different types of materials including durability, opacity, strength and conductivity

Lesson One : Sorting Materials

Identify and record a range of ways of grouping and sorting different types of materials by their properties

Lesson Two : Paper

Compare and describe different types of paper by their weight, opacity and durability properties

Lesson Three : Metals

Describe and compare different types of metal by their strength, durability and magnetism properties

Lesson Four : Plastics

Identify, match and group different types of plastic materials using their individual properties

Lesson Five : Fabrics

Identify and describe the properties of different fabrics that can be used for a range of functions

Lesson Six : Testing Conductivity

Investigate and test a range of different materials to identify the most effective electrical conductors.

Testing Materials Assessment

Assess abilities in investigating and testing the properties of different types of materials including durability, opacity, strength and conductivity
