Lesson One – Matching Areas

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify and record a selection of rectilinear shapes that have the same area when measured correctly in square centimetres.

The class can select and model how to use a formula that can be used to make it easier and quicker to calculate the area of a rectangle shape using multiplication number skills.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to identify and record a selection of rectilinear shapes that have the same area when measured correctly in square centimetres

Activities in this teaching pack include a differentiated set of cards to select and record examples of different rectilinear shapes that have the same area when measured in square centimetres using multiplication calculations to find the area of each shape.

The interactive presentation gets the children to explore a selection of rectilinear shapes that have the same area in square centimetres.

This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to develop and refine skills in measuring and calculating the areas and perimeters of different geometric shapes including rectilinear and compound shapes. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
