This maths scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify, record and compare the surface areas of a range of different rectilinear and irregular shapes by counting their matching numbers of squares. The class can suggest and explain how to describe and classify different shapes by their surface areas.

Compare and describe square and rectangular shapes by the difference in their surface areas
Lesson Two : Shape Squares
Identify and explain the importance of using the same sized squares when measuring the surface area of a shape
Lesson Three : Area Match
Select and record examples of different rectilinear shapes with the same area by counting their matching number of squares
Lesson Four : Letter Areas
Measure and record the shape of different letters of the alphabet by counting their matching number of squares
Lesson Five : Area Squiggles
Practise identifying the area of different irregular shapes by counting their matching number of full and half squares

Investigate and practise different techniques to shape and combine materials when producing models to make gifts to give to someone special for Valentine’s Day

Practise using nets of cube and cuboid shapes and a range of materials to make and decorate boxes to hold Valentine’s Day gifts for someone special
