Lesson One – Counting Thousands

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to practise counting forward in steps of thousands starting from different four digit numbers to illustrate changes to the place to the thousand digits.

The class can select a range of different four digit numbers and show the sums that are one thousand more by changing the value of the thousands digit for each calculated sum.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to practise counting forward in steps of thousands starting from different four digit numbers to illustrate changes to the place to the thousand digits

Activities in this teaching pack include a differentiated set of worksheets to identify and record sets of numbers that are one thousand more than different four digit numbers by indicating changes to the place values of the digits in each selected number.

The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to count forward in steps of thousands starting from different four digit numbers.

This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to compare, order and sequence different sets of four digits numbers by using the place value of their numerical digits including counting in steps of thousands. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
