Lesson One – Recipe Rules

This English teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify and describe the language and sentence structures that have been used in a food recipe when preparing pancakes with a range of different toppings and fillings.

The class can suggest and explain some of the rules to follow when writing a set of instructions so that they are clear and easy to understand when making something.

Activities in this teaching pack include a shared reading text to explain how to format and structure a set of instructions for a pancake recipe and a differentiated set of cards to identify language and sentence structures that have been used in instructional writing for a pancake recipe.

The interactive presentation gets the children to explore the language and sentence structures used in a food recipe to make pancakes with a range of different toppings and fillings.

This lesson is part of an English scheme of work to get the children to compose and follow a set of instructions about how to make some pancakes to celebrate Shrove Tuesday using the correct sentence structures and vocabulary words. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
