Lesson Three – Wind Speed

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to select and combine a range of different materials to build an anemometer that can be used to measure the strength of the wind in locations around the school.

The class can identify the most effective materials to use when constructing different parts of a weather instrument that can be used to measure wind speed.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to teach the children to select and combine a range of different materials to build an anemometer that can be used to measure the strength of the wind in locations around the school

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to describe materials that can be used to make a particular weather instrument and identify the most effective materials that can be used when making a weather instrument and a template to select and record improvements to the design of a specific product to match the success criteria [enlarge to A3].

The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to combine materials to build an anemometer that can be used to measure the strength of the wind.

This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select materials and techniques to utilise when designing and making a range of instruments that can be used measure the local weather around the school. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
