Runaway Train

This music scheme of work for Key Stage One gets the children to practise composing and playing different sounds and rhythm patterns to represent the movement of a train using long and short durations. The class can identify and describe how to play each percussion instrument to create sounds with matching durations.

Lesson One : Train Sounds
Identify, describe and perform some of the different sounds that might be heard when travelling somewhere on a train journey

Lesson Two : Train Whistle
Identify and produce matching sounds with long and short durations to represent some of the different parts that can be found on a train

Lesson Three : Engine Sounds
Investigate and perform some of the special ways of playing a range of instruments to produce long and short sounds representing different parts of a train

Lesson Four : Train Tracks
Practise some of the different ways of playing tuned and untuned instruments to represent the sound of a train moving along a set of railway tracks

Lesson Five : Train Station
Investigate some of the different ways of playing tuned and untuned instruments to create long and short sounds that can represent a train station location

Lesson Six : Train Journey
Select and combine some long and short duration sounds to compose a piece of music representing the different movements and actions of a train
