Lesson Two – 17th Century Houses

This history teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to explore life in London for rich and poor people at the time of the Great Fire by examining how houses were constructed during this period in history.
The class can identify and make comparisons between a house built during the seventeenth century with the structure and style of a modern house built in Britain today.

Activities in this teaching pack include a display poster to compare a house in the 17th century with modern housing today, a set of cards to explore the construction of houses from different periods in history and a template to record comparisons between a house built in the seventeenth century with a house constructed in modern Britain.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore the style and construction of houses built in the 17th century to make comparisons with modern houses and suggest problems that might have been caused by how houses were built prior to the Great Fire.
This lesson is part of a history scheme of work to investigate, describe and record information about some of the historical events surrounding the Great Fire of London that occurred in the seventieth century. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and an interactive presentation to introduce concepts and key skills.
