Lesson One – Lighthouses

This history teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to plan and write a diary entry to describe the range of different jobs and routines that need to be performed by a lighthouse keeper each day.
The class can identify and make some comparisons about how lighthouses were operated by keepers differently in the past than from today.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to describe the location and function of lighthouses in the world, a set of cards to identify some of the jobs that can be performed by a lighthousekeeper and templates to structure and write a diary to describe lighthouse jobs and name one of the jobs that are required to run and manage a lighthouse.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to write a diary entry to describe the range of jobs and routines performed by a lighthouse keeper.
This lesson is part of a history scheme of work to get the children to investigate and record how life was different in the past from today by exploring the story of Grace Darling and the rescue of the Forfarshire. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
