Lesson Five – Sewing Puppets

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to investigate and practise some of the special ways that can be used to join and combine different fabrics and materials using sewing skills.
The class can explain and model how to use running stitches to follow lines and shapes when sewing pieces of fabric that might be used for different pieces of a puppet’s clothing.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe some of the special materials that can be used to make items of clothing for a puppet character and templates to practise sewing different lines on to pieces of fabric using a running stitch.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and practise some of the special ways of joining different fabrics and materials using sewing skills.
This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select, shape and combine textile and other materials to make a range of puppet characters that can be used to narrate a traditional story. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
