Castle Building
This design technology scheme of work for Key Stage One gets the children to explore and model some of the different shapes and techniques that can be used to construct a model of a castle showing the main parts and their functions. The class can test their completed castle models to identify changes and improvements.
Explore and model some of the different shapes and techniques that can be used to construct a model of a castle showing the main parts and their functions
Lesson One : Castle Parts
Identify and describe the function of different parts of a castle as preparation for model making
Lesson Two : Castle Walls
Test and describe different ways of joining materials to build a model castle wall
Lesson Three : Castle Drawbridge
Design and build a model of a part of a castle that includes a movement mechanism
Lesson Four : Castle Letter
Plan and design a model of a castle to match success criteria for its construction
Lesson Five : Castle Construction
Select and combine different materials to build a model of a castle to match success criteria
Lesson Six : Castle Testing
Test completed models of castles against selected success criteria for their construction
-
Number Doubles
Model and record how to double different numbers to twenty using concrete equipment and pictorial diagrams to support calculations
-
Zoo Animal Doubles
Practise doubling different numbers of animals that might be seen at a zoo recorded in words and digits to ten using diagrams and number lines to model each product
-
Doubles Facts
Identify, match and record the doubles of different numbers to ten using concrete equipment and repeated addition to support each multiplication number calculation
-
Tower Doubles
Practise counting and doubling different numbers of cubes that have been used to make a range of towers to five, ten and fifteen
