Lesson Two – Comparing Mass

This numeracy teaching pack for the Foundation Stage gets the children to practise using a bucket balance correctly to identify, compare and record the mass of different pairs of classroom objects and tools.
The class can select and sort sets of objects into matching groups by their comparative masses using the matching vocabulary words to make each comparison.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to practise using a bucket balance correctly to identify, compare and record the mass of different pairs of classroom objects and tools
Activities in this teaching pack include a template to select and record the heaviest items when comparing the mass of pairs of classroom objects and a set of cards to compare and label boxes filled with different masses using the correct vocabulary words.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to use a bucket balance to compare and record the mass of different pairs of classroom objects and tools.
This lesson is part of a numeracy scheme of work to get the children to measure, compare and record the mass and capacity of different objects and containers using a range of non-standard measurements. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
