Lesson Three – Tens Number Changes

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to identify and record changes that can happen to the place value of digits in a number when adding different two digit numbers and tens.

The class can practise using an abacus to model and illustrate changes to the place value of the digits in a number following an addition calculation.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to teach the children to identify and record changes that can happen to the place value of digits in a number when adding different two digit numbers and tens

Activities in this teaching pack include a worksheet to record how to add different two digit numbers and tens using a number diagram to track the calculations and a set of cards to generate different two digit numbers to use when performing addition calculations.

The interactive presentation gets the children to explore changes to place value when adding different two digit numbers and tens.

This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to model and illustrate how to add pairs of two digit numbers with multiples of tens and ones and other two digit numbers using concrete equipment, diagrams and informal written calculations. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
