Lesson Six – Hand Puppet

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to practise selecting and combining materials using different techniques to make a puppet to use when performing a Punch and Judy show.

The class can explain and model how to follow a set of instructions correctly to complete each of the different steps when producing a matching character for a puppet performance.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe different ways of joining pairs of materials when making a product and a worksheet to design and make a hand puppet by combining and joining different materials when following a set of instructions.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore how to combine materials using different techniques to make a Punch and Judy puppet for a performance.

This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select, shape and combine textile and other materials to make a range of puppet characters that can be used to narrate a traditional story. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
