Lesson Four – Joining Materials

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to explore, describe and test some of the different ways of joining a range of materials to produce a puppet to use in a performance of a Punch and Judy show.
The class can explain and model how each of the special materials can be fastened together and combined to produce different parts for a puppet character.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe some of the different materials that have been used to make a puppet and a worksheet to select and record some of the materials that can be joined together using a range of special fastenings.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and test some of the different ways of joining materials to use as part of a Punch and Judy puppet.
This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select, shape and combine textile and other materials to make a range of puppet characters that can be used to narrate a traditional story. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
