Lesson Six – Plants for Shelter

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to explore how to test and record some of the special ways of building a protective shelter using different parts of a flowering plant.

The class can suggest and explain how each part of a plant might provide protection from the wind and rain when used to build a matching construction for shelter.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe types of plants used to construct different buildings and name parts of a plant that can be used to provide shelter and a template to select and record different parts of a plant used to build a protective shelter from the wind and rain.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore and and record some of the special ways of building a protective shelter using different parts of a plant.

This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to identify and describe the common parts found on all plants and explain how plants can be used for different functions including food, shelter and clothing.
