Unit J – Lengths, Masses and Capacities

This maths scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to solve contextual problems by comparing and converting between different units of measurement for mass, length and capacity. The class can explain the number calculations that can be used when converting between units of measurement.

Solve a selection of contextual problems by comparing and converting between different units of measurement for mass, length and capacity

Lesson One : Kilogram Fractions

Investigate and record how to calculate and record mass in kilograms that have been converted into grams by using different non-unit fractions

Lesson Two : Comparing Masses

Practise using the symbols for greater than and less than to compare pairs of masses that have been recorded in measurement units for grams and kilograms

Lesson Three : Soup Shopping

Explore and record how to convert different measurements between grams and kilograms to calculate the prices of special foods that are needed for different recipes

Lesson Four : Changing Lengths

Investigate and record how to measure different lengths of objects found around the school and convert each measurement between units for metres, centimetres and millimetres

Lesson Five : Fruit Cocktails

Explain and model how to convert a range of capacities between litres and millilitres when mixing the ingredients that are needed to make some different drinks
