Lesson Six – Trains Yesterday and Today

This history teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to describe and compare some of the different journeys that could be made using both modern and steam trains for a range of special purposes by families.

The class can select and record information about a journey on a modern or steam train to identify and make comparisons between the two forms of travel.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to describe and compare journeys on modern and steam trains, a shared reading text to investigate and compare travelling by train today and in the past and a template to select and record information about a journey on a modern or steam train.

The interactive presentation can be used to explore some of the different journeys that can be made using both modern and steam trains.

This lesson is part of a history scheme of work to get the children to explore and illustrate how travel has changed since the past through the invention and development of trains from steam to electric technologies. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
