Lesson Five – Cleaning Water

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify, explain and test how to use filter paper to clean contaminated water when different solid materials have been mixed with a liquid.

The class can make predictions about what might happen when cleaning water using a range of equipment and then record the results of their tests using the correct scientific vocabulary.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to teach the children to identify, explain and test how to use filter paper to clean contaminated water when different solid materials have been mixed with a liquid

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe different ways of cleaning dirty water, a table display card to support an investigation into how to clean contaminated water and a template to record predictions and observations related to the test.

The interactive presentation gets the children to suggest and explain some of the different methods that can be used to clean water that has been contaminated by a range of solid materials including the use of filter paper.

This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to explore, test and explain how a range of different materials can change their states between solids, liquids and gases by conducting a series of fair tests. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
