Lesson Four – Mixing Solids

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate, test and record scientific observations about what happens when mixing a range of different materials with water.

The class can make predictions about what might happen when mixing pairs of materials and then record the results of their tests using the correct scientific vocabulary.

Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to teach the children to investigate, test and record scientific observations about what happens when mixing a range of different materials with water

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe what happens to different solid materials when mixed with water, a table display card to support an investigation into mixed materials and a template to record predictions and observations related to the test.

The interactive presentation gets the children to explore what might happen when mixing solid materials with a liquid and how to use the correct scientific vocabulary when recording observations about what happened.

This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to explore, test and explain how a range of different materials can change their states between solids, liquids and gases by conducting a series of fair tests. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
