Lesson One – What Materials

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to investigate and describe some of the different materials that could be used to build each of the parts for a garden scarecrow model to scare away visiting birds.
The class can test and explain which of selected materials can survive different weather elements when left outside in a garden such as rain and wind.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to investigate and describe some of the different materials that could be used to build each of the parts for a garden scarecrow model to scare away visiting birds

The interactive presentation can be used to explore some of the different materials that could be used to build each part of a garden scarecrow model.
This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select and combine different materials to design and make scarecrows for a garden to match identified success criteria. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
