Lesson Six – Volcanic Rocks

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to research and compare some of the different types of rocks that can be formed during the eruption of a volcano.
The class can explain how to collect and record information that can answer key questions about different types of volcanic rocks and what makes them special and distinct from other materials.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe the stages that can occur during a volcanic eruption and some of the rocks that can be created following an eruption and a table display card to record some of the the similarities and differences between different types of volcanic rocks.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to compare some of different types of rocks that can be formed by a volcano.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to identify, compare and classify different types of rocks, soils and fossils according to their matching material properties for appearance, texture and substance. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
