Lesson Two – Pulleys

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to explore, describe and model how to use a system of pulleys as a mechanical device to move a specific type of load in different ways.
The class can practise using diagrams and write explanations to describe how to solve a problem by using a pulley system such as moving some cargo from a ship using a crane with a pulley.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to explore, describe and model how to use a system of pulleys as a mechanical device to move a specific type of load in different ways
Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe how to use a pulley as a mechanical device to move a load working with the three types of pulley systems and a set of cards to test and record how to move loads using using different pulley arrangements and systems.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and model how to use a pulley as a mechanical device to move a load in different ways.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to research, test and illustrate how to use different types of levers, pulleys and gears to change the direction and strength of a range of forces. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
