Lesson Four – Night and Day

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate, describe and prove how the rotation of the Earth can create periods of night and day on the surface of the planet.
The class can complete and record results from a practical test to model how the rotation of the Earth on its axis produces light and dark periods in relation to the position of the Sun in space.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to investigate, describe and prove how the rotation of the Earth can create periods of night and day on the surface of the planet
Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to support understand of the key facts about how the Earth rotates on its own axis and a worksheet to investigate and record how night and day is created on the surface Earth by the rotation on its own axis.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and prove how the Earth’s rotation can create night and day on the surface of the planet.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the Solar System by using practical models and researching information. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
