Lesson Five – Sun Shadows

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to explain and model how to collect and record evidence to prove the movement of the Earth in space around the Sun by tracking some shadow shapes.
The class can practise using a practical test to model and record how shadows can change during the course of one day as the Earth orbits around the Sun.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to explain and model how to collect and record evidence to prove the movement of the Earth in space around the Sun by tracking some shadow shapes
Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to support understand of the key facts about how the Sun creates shadows on Earth and a worksheet to track and record the changes to the position of the Sun during the course of one day by using shadows.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and record evidence to prove the movement of the Earth in space around the Sun by noting the changing position of shadows on the ground.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to describe the movement of the Earth, and other planets, relative to the Sun in the Solar System by using practical models and researching information. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
