Changing Materials

This science teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to investigate, test and record how a range of different materials can be changed and altered including the use of dissolving and evaporation. The class can complete fair tests to explore how different solids might dissolve into water and how they can be recovered.

Investigate, test and record how a range of different materials can be changed and altered including the use of dissolving and evaporation

Lesson One : Filtering Water
Conduct and record the results of scientific tests about how to use a selection of different methods when filtering substances that are contained in water

Lesson Two : Purifying Water
Explore and model some of the different methods that can be used to purify water that has been contaminated with a range of solid substances

Lesson Three : Condensation
Investigate and record observations about how water can change between different states when it has been heated and cooled

Lesson Four : Dissolving
Conduct and record results from a scientific test to identify and observe if a range of different substances can dissolve in water

Lesson Five : Changing Solids
Explore and record how to change the rate at which different solids can dissolve in water when completing a scientific investigation

Lesson Six : Irreversible Changes
Identify, describe and test some of the changes that can be made to materials that are irreversible and return to their previous state

Changing Materials Assessment
