Unit I – Fraction Sums

This maths scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to model and record the steps that can be used to solve problems by adding and subtracting pairs of non-unit and mixed number fractions. The class can explain how to convert fractions to use the same denominators to add and subtract together.

Model and record the steps that can be used to solve problems by adding and subtracting pairs of non-unit and mixed number fractions

Lesson One : Fraction Lengths
Identify and convert pairs of fractions to the same denominators to compare different lengths of materials

Lesson Two : Fraction Calculations
Revise and illustrate how to add and subtract pairs of unit and non-unit fractions with the same denominators

Lesson Three : Fraction Additions
Explore and illustrate how to add pairs of fractions with different denominators by using their lowest common multiples

Lesson Four : Fraction Subtractions
Practise subtracting pairs of mixed number and non-unit fractions by converting denominators to their lowest common multiples

Lesson Five : Wholes and Parts
Investigate and record how to add pairs of mixed number fractions with different denominators
-
Ancient History Finds
Explore and illustrate how to use apostrophes for possession to indicate some of the special artefacts that were owned and used in past civilizations
-
Wind Turbine
Plan and write a magazine article about an environmental issue listing arguments in favour of or against the installation of a wind turbine
-
Radio Commercials
Practise using persuasive language to write newspaper adverts and radio commercials to sell houses in the school’s neighbourhood
-
Estate Agent
Investigate and record how to punctuate apostrophes for possession correctly in sentences that might be used by an estate agent when selling houses
