Lesson Three – Hundreds and Thousands

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to practise subtracting selected multiples of hundreds and thousands from different four digit numbers by using some informal calculation techniques for subtraction.
The class can model and record how to use counting back when subtracting different multiples of hundreds and thousands when finding each of the calculated sums.

Activities in this teaching pack include differentiated templates to model and record how to subtract different four digit numbers and a multiple of thousands and hundreds for core and extension ability levels and four digit numbers and one thousand and one hundred for support ability levels.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to subtract selected multiples of hundreds and thousands from different four digit numbers.
This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to practise mental and written calculation strategies to subtract pairs of numbers with up to four digits including exchange between place value. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
