Road Safety

This geography scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify, describe and compare different traffic hazards and dangers that can be encountered when making journeys in the local area. The class can record an improvement to a road giving a presentation to outline arguments for and against the changes.

Lesson One : School Journey
Identify and describe some of the different hazards and dangers that might be experienced during a journey to school by walking or using other forms of transport

Lesson Two : Road Hazards
Investigate and present information about some of the different traffic hazards and dangers that can be seen and experienced on a road near to the school

Lesson Three : Pedestrian Crossings
Identify, record and assess the safety aspects of some of the different road crossings that might be found and used on roads close to the school

Lesson Four : Road Improvements
Explain and model how to compile a list of possible improvements that could be made to a road close to the school to make it safer for pedestrians

Lesson Five : Road Changes
Prepare and structure a presentation to outline some of the possible improvements that could be made to a road in the local area to make it safer for pedestrians to use

Lesson Six : Road Viewpoints
Research and present ideas about some of the different changes that could be made to a road close to the school to improve safety for pedestrians
