Lesson One – Building Materials

This design technology teaching pack for Key Stage Two gets the children to identify, describe and compare some of the special materials that have been used to construct and expand different types of buildings and shelters.
The class can record and explain why some different materials have been used to build specific types of buildings such as using slates for the roofs and bricks for the walls.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify and describe how different buildings and shelters have been constructed and a worksheet to select and record examples of different materials that have been used to make a product with a specific function.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore some of the materials that have been used to construct different types of buildings and shelters.
This lesson is part of a design technology scheme of work to get the children to select and combine a range of different materials and building techniques to construct a model of a survival shelter suitable for an island location. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
