Ancient Egyptian Tiles

This art and design scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to design and produce tiles that can represent Ancient Egyptian culture and traditions by adding shapes, patterns and attachments to clay models. The class can select a design for their tiles using knowledge from history of the civilization.

Lesson One : Statues and Tombs
Investigate, describe and record some of the different shapes and patterns that were added to artefacts used by the Ancient Egyptians

Lesson Two : Clay Imprints
Explore and model how to use different tools and equipment to make a range of impressions in clay to reflect how life was special in Ancient Egypt

Lesson Three : Handles and Spouts
Identify and describe how to use clay slip to join and combine different elements of a model clay artefact to represent life in Ancient Egypt

Lesson Four : Tile Design
Select and design shapes and patterns that can be used on a clay tile to reflect some of the customs and traditions of the Ancient Egyptian civilization

Lesson Five : Egyptian Tile
Explain and model how to produce a clay tile using shapes and impressions to reflect and illustrate a range of Ancient Egyptian culture and traditions

Lesson Six : Tile Reviews
Practise reviewing and suggesting changes and improvements to clay tiles reflecting some Ancient Egyptian culture and traditions from the past
