Lesson Five – Dolphins and Whales

This science teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to explore, describe and record how different mammals can be adapted to living in the sea environment when seeking food, protection and shelter.
The class can practise producing artwork showing a whale or dolphin and compose sentences to explain why they are a special type of animal and suited to living in a marine environment.

Activities in this teaching pack include display posters to identify, describe and compare different animals that live in a marine habitat and templates to explain and record how a sea creature is adapted to living in a marine habitat using artwork and sentences.
The interactive presentation can be used to explore and record how different mammals are adapted to living in the sea environment.
This lesson is part of a science scheme of work to get the children to identify, describe and compare some of the different plants and animals that can be found living in a marine habitat including in the sea or on the beach. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
