Churches

This religious education scheme of work for Key Stage One gets the children to identify and explain the function and importance of churches in communities and describe how Christians use special artefacts to worship God. The class can make a visit to a church and describe what makes the building important in the local area.

Lesson One : Places of Worship
Locate, describe and compare some of the different special buildings that can be found in the local area including any churches

Lesson Two : Inside a Church
Identify and describe some of the special objects and parts that can be found inside a Christian church

Lesson Three : Church Visit
Explore and record some of the different reasons as to why people might visit and use a Christian church in the local area

Lesson Four : Local Church
Investigate, describe and record how churches are the same or different as some of the other buildings that can be found in the local area

Lesson Five : Church Services
Identify and describe some of the different services and rituals that are performed inside a church including christenings

Lesson Six : Stained Glass Window
Explore and illustrate some of the different ways that stories from the Bible can be presented inside a church including the use of stained glass windows
