Lesson Three – Fraction Towers

This maths teaching pack for Key Stage One gets the children to identify and record how to build different towers of cubes to illustrate the fraction equivalence that can be observed between one half and two quarters.
The class can practise using bar models to record the numbers of cubes in different towers that have been divided into halves and quarters to show their matching equivalence.
Download this teaching pack including a lesson plan, classroom activities and an interactive presentation to identify and record how to build different towers of cubes to illustrate the fraction equivalence that can be observed between one half and two quarters
Activities in this teaching pack include a set of cards to select different multiples of four when modelling fraction equivalence and a template to record the fraction equivalence that can be observed between one half and two quarters using the selected numbers.
The interactive presentation gets the children to explore how to build different towers of cubes to illustrate the fraction equivalence between one half and two quarters.
This lesson is part of a maths scheme of work to get the children to find and illustrate fractions that are quarters of different shapes, quantities and numbers using concrete equipment and diagrams to model calculations and show equivalence to halves. There are teaching activities for shared learning, differentiated worksheets to support independent learning and interactive presentations to introduce concepts and key skills.
