Football News

Help the children develop their English and literacy skills by getting them to research, compose and publish newspapers about some of the special events that happened during a football tournament. The class can write reports describing matches and produce adverts persuading readers to buy football souvenirs.

Newspaper Jobs
Split the class into small groups and assign them different jobs that need to completed in order to publish a newspaper about a football tournament. Some groups can be responsible for writing news reports about some of the matches played between different teams. Other groups can design adverts for football souvenirs or compile features about events linked to the football tournament such as cultural concerts or art galleries. One group can be in charge of collating the reports and adverts to produce the finished newspaper which can then be printed and delivered to other classes in the school.

Journalistic Writing
Spend some time working with the class to investigate the structure and format of journalistic writing by exploring written reports from national and local newspapers. The children can make a list of features that should be included in a news report such as present tense, impersonal writing and answers to the questions of the who, when, where, what and why. They can also identify how to include other information about different events by including statements from eye-witnesses. The class can produce their own checklists that they can use when writing a news report about an event during a football tournament to help check they have used all of the main features of this type of writing.

Persuasive Writing
The class can also identify how different adverts have been presented in a newspaper using special writing to persuade the readers to buy a specific product. Get the children to name how adverts can use slogans and catchphrases and facts and information to compel the reader to perform an action. The class can suggest changes to different adverts in a national or local newspaper to make them more or less persuasive. Work with the children to write a set of instructions that someone will need to follow when producing adverts to persuade readers of the newspaper to buy some souvenirs about the football tournament.

Newspaper Production
The class can work in their assigned groups to compose each of the different reports and adverts ready to go into the newspaper about a football tournament. Allow the children to work independently to research events and matches that have already occurred during the tournament by using newspapers, magazines and websites. Each group can split into pairs or work individually to produce a report or advert to add to the newspaper pages. The children in charge of organising the whole newspaper can set a limit on the text size of a report or advert so that they can fit on different pages in the paper. The class can use word processing and graphic software programs to produce the selected reports and adverts.

Newspaper Publishing
Once all of the reports and adverts have been produced then the group in charge of organising the newspaper can add the documents to the pages. The individual reports and adverts can be printed and then arranged on each page which can then be collated into the full newspaper with matching headlines. Get the children to add some photos to accompany the written reports added to the newspaper pages. Once the whole newspaper has been created then the pages can be photocopied. stapled together and then distributed around the school.
