Space Helmets

This art and design scheme of work for Key Stage Two gets the children to select, shape and combine mouldable materials to make a model of an astronaut’s helmet that could be worn when exploring space. The class can use papier mache to structure space helmets and test different ways of adding attachments.

Select, shape and combine different mouldable materials to make a model of an astronaut’s helmet that could be worn when exploring space

Lesson One : Sputnik and Apollo

Investigate and record some of the different designs and materials that can be used to make helmets for astronauts to wear when travelling and working in space

Lesson Two : Helmet Design

Explore how to identify and record how to produce a model of an astronaut’s space helmet when shaping and combing a range of different materials

Lesson Three : Helmet Model

Investigate how to select and work with some different materials to mould a range of shapes that can be used for the design of an astronaut’s space helmet

Lesson Four : Helmet Attachments

Practise adding extra attachments for a range of functions to model space helmets using some different materials and methods

Lesson Five : Textures and Colours

Explore how to finish building and completing a model of an astronaut’s space helmet by adding some different textures and colours

Lesson Six : Helmet Testing

Investigate how to review and suggest changes and improvements to the design of a work of art of a space helmet that could be worn by an astronaut
