Unit B – Animal Alphabet

This literacy scheme of work for the Foundation Stage gets the children to practise finding information in non-fiction books about different animals that live around the world, match the names of animals to the corresponding letters of the alphabet and write simple sentences as captions for pictures of favourite animals.

Lesson One : Animal Pages
Practise identifying and recording some of the pages in a non-fiction text that can provide facts and information about a range of different wild animals

Lesson Two : Fact or Fiction
Identify and describe how to read and use some of the different types of texts that can provide facts and information about a range of special animals that live wild in the world

Lesson Three : Animal Sentences
Investigate how to suggest and complete example sentences about different animals to accompany illustrations that might be viewed in non-fiction information books

Lesson Four : Picture Captions
Practise composing and writing simple sentences to describe some of the different animals that are featured in pictures or paintings by artists

Lesson Five : Art Gallery
Explain and model how to select and record simple sentences to use as captions accompanying pictures of some different animals that might be included as part of a non-fiction information book

Measure, compare and record the mass and capacity of different objects and containers using a range of non-standard measurements

Word Halves
Identify and complete the halves of letters for different cvc words beginning with the initial phoneme sounds for matching alphabet letters

Seaside Subtraction
Calculate and record the difference between pairs of numbers to ten by counting back to show numbers of items sold in a shop at the seaside
